REDWOOD CITY – The Gavilan College women’s soccer team could not match Canada College’s firepower in Tuesday’s road match as the Lady Rams fell by a wide 8-0 margin.
“They did really well despite the lopsided outcome.” said head Coach Marty Behler, “They had good passing and shots on goal.”
The Lady Rams are still without a home field on campus as well as an adequate practice field – hindering the girls’ skills development and fitness. Behler hopes that the team can return to playing at Gavilan College on Oct. 28 at 4 p.m. The home games scheduled for next week will be played in Morgan Hill.
In Tuesday’s loss, Gavilan was only down 3-0 at the half – but could not mount any type of comeback.
“Unfortunately, that’s been our problem,” said Behler of the Lady Rams’ lack of scoring.
Along with field problems, the Lady Rams are also playing without sweeper Sonya Ornelas – who was injured in their first game against Chabot and has been playing off and on. Behler has turned to freshman Cynthia Pinto as a replacement, but that also puts the team’s leading scorer on defense.
“It’s really difficult to get them ready for a match-up,” Behler said. “I think (returning to our home field) is really going to make a major difference. The girls are really excited to play on the field.”
Gavilan’s next game will be on Friday at Foothill College.
