Gavilan’s women’s volleyball team received no treats this Halloween.
Rather, the Rams were shown the door at home Wednesday night, losing three straight games to the West Valley Vikings 30-18, 30-17, 30-18.
Coach Kevin Kramer couldn’t explain why his team came out flat, but he did know the opponents were ready to play.
“First things first, West Valley is as solid as can be,” he said. “Number 1 took the match over. In my opinion, she’s the best player we’ve seen (all season).”
Referring to the Vikings’ outside hitter Vanessa Ahern, who found ways to attack the net from a variety of directions, Kramer said the Rams just couldn’t put together a consistent string of points throughout any of the three games.
“The girls had a lot of heart, they wanted to be here,” he said. “As soon as we got on the court, some of the lightness dissipated,”
Setter Janet Unciano was also a bit unclear on what happened to the Rams’ intensity once the match began.
“Just mentally and physically we’re there. We’re working hard and stuff … (but) during warm-ups we kind of just froze up,” she said.
Unciano led the Rams with 15 assists, setting up many of Jamie Temperino’s team-high 13 kills. Temperino also led Gavilan in digs with 12, three more than the team’s second highest total by Nicole Falcão. Gilroy native Barbie Csore had five kills.
The Rams dropped to 10-8 overall, 4-3 in the Coast Conference play.
The schedule doesn’t get any easier for Gavilan, which will need to win its next match Friday night at Cabrillo College to have any hope of making the postseason. Currently sitting in third place in league, the Rams have a tough task at hand considering Cabrillo sits atop the Coast Conference.
“It will be a good test of (our players’) character and their fight,” Kramer said.
The match will begin at 6:30 p.m.
