During a sophomore showcase in Stockton recently, Gavilan basketball player Jessie LoBue was sitting on the bench when he noticed a man in the stands hold up a piece of paper that read simply: UC Riverside?

LoBue smiled at what turned out to be a recruiter for the school, and last Wednesday, the 6-foot-7 sophomore forward signed a National Letter of Intent to attend the University of California – Riverside on a full-ride scholarship beginning in the fall.

“It best fits me,” LoBue said. “I had a lot of different offers from a lot of different schools, but I wanted to stay close to home and I wanted to be in the Southern California area anyway.”

At Gavilan, LoBue’s accomplishments earned him first team All-Conference honors in the Coast Conference – South where he averaged 18 points and seven rebounds per game for the Rams, while also shooting 85 percent from the free-throw line.

Before coming to Gavilan College, LoBue attended Santa Cruz High School, where he played on the 2005 state championship team.

LoBue will make his official visit on May 1 to Riverside, where he expects to play the 3-guard position.
