Cobb, Key and Coelho earn all-league honors in girls soccer;
Hurtado and Ramirez for boys

San Benito High sophomore Hannah Cobb was named the Tri-County Athletic League’s Offensive MVP, Emily Key earned co-goalkeeper of the year honors and Sophie Coelho was named co-junior of the year on Monday for girls soccer during the 2008-09 season.

Cobb scored a league-leading 23 goals for the Lady ‘Balers this season, which finished 15-3-4 overall, 7-2-4 in the TCAL.

The keeper Key, a senior, made 142 saves in net this year, and she shared the award with Salinas’ Jenna Piini.

Key earned the same award as a sophomore for the Lady ‘Balers.

Coelho, who scored nine goals and had seven assists this season, was named co-junior of the year with Gilroy’s Ariana Carrillo.

The Lady ‘Balers had three first team selections as well, which included Cobb, senior defender JC Clayton and sophomore forward Daniela Ocampo, who was second on the team with 11 goals. Ocampo also led the team with nine assists.

Coelho, Yaira Lizarraga and Sara Yamasaki were named second team all-league, while Samantha Moreno and Key were given honorable mention.

Additionally, Clayton was named to the TCAL Sportsmanship team.

In total, eight different Lady ‘Balers were acknowledged for 12 awards.

Gilroy’s Irene Figueroa and Notre Dame’s Annika Rose took home the league’s MVP awards, while Spirit Sydney Busch was the TCAL’s defensive MVP. Gilroy High head coach Jose Hernandez was named coach of the year.

Meanwhile, on the San Benito High boys soccer team, midfielder Andres Hurtado and sweeper Carlos Ramirez were named first team all-league for the 2008-09 season.

The ‘Balers finished 5-12-2 overall, 2-8-2 in the TCAL.

Senior mid Efrain Espinoza and senior forward Alejandro Castillo were chosen to the second team, while sophomore forward Luis Gonzalez and senior keeper Christian Maravilla were given honorable mention.

Alvarez’ Hugo Gonzalez was named the TCAL’s MVP and offensive player of the year; Gilroy’s Bruce Ocana earned midfield player of the year status; and Jairo Pacheco of Alisal was named defensive player of the year. Palma head coach Scott Corner was named the league’s coach of the year.
