Who runs the site: The site was founded by Mark Jeantheau, who has worked as a writer, cartoonist, Web developer and done other jobs. He wanted to combine his humor – his cartoons have appeared in Writer’s Digest and the Washington Post – with concerns about the environment.

Who is likely to use the site: People who want information about environmental issues, but who also want a good laugh.

Pros: The site covers topics such as solar power, standby power for home electronics and high gasoline prices, among other environmental issues. A click on the link for solar power, explains passive solar power – such as having windows on the south side of the house because that’s where the sun will shine in.

If you are looking for something that is not listed on the main environmental issues page, the search feature will bring up other options. For instances, with the holidays coming up, there is plenty of information on being green for Christmas. Some suggestions include making sure a gift is useful – don’t buy something that is likely to sit on a shelf just to give a gift – and buying organic gifts.

One of the easier ways to navigate around is to click on the resources page and click on a topic. A click on biodiversity brings up several articles from Grinning Planet as well as a link to other sites.

Cons: The site has so much information – basically four years worth of collected articles and cartoons – it can be a little unwieldy to navigate. In addition, some of the cartoons are really funny and others are more hit and miss. They do try to stay with an environmental theme, and some of the jokes are a bit of a stretch. All in all, it is an informative site.
