Swiss agribusiness conglomerate Syngenta AG has agreed to buy Gilroy-based flower seed producer Goldsmith Seeds Inc. for $74 million.

Syngenta officials say it would keep the Goldsmith brand and would increase its position in the global flower industry. Goldsmith has facilities there and in Guatemala. It has 1,500 employees.

U.S.-traded shares of Syngenta rose $2.73, or 9.5 percent, to $31.43. In extended trading, they fell 92 cents, or 2.9 percent, to $30.51.
