Keep your ‘dominant eye’ on the game
Good putting has a lot to do with how you perceive your target line. If you know your dominant eye and use it properly your chances of having a clear perception of that line is much improved.
The first thing you need to do is find out which is dominant, so here is a way to do that. Hold your hands out in front of you and hold your palms up as if you were pushing something away from you. Next put your hands together and form a triangle between them about the size of a quarter. Now find an object some distance away from you and look at it between the triangle until it is clear. First close your left eye and then the right. If you close your left eye and can still see the object that means you have focused with your right eye and you are right eye dominant. If you close your right and still see your object you are left eye dominant.
Once you know which eye is dominant, this can help you decide which you will have better sight down your target line with an open or closed stance when you putt.
If you are right-eye dominant and putt with a closed stance you are pulling your dominant eye off your target line and that will give you a false impression of the true location of the hole; if you are left-eye dominant, a closed stance keeps that eye on the line.
A right eye dominant putter is better off with either an open or square stance. This way after you have lined up your putt and are addressing the ball, you will have a truer sight down your line. A left-eye dominant putter can set up closed and not pull their eye off the line, but if they set up open they will. In putting, open and closed stances are subtle and dramatic if they work, so just remember to keep that eye on the line.
