The South Valley Fleurs Garden Club awarded grant funding to the first of two San Benito County schools for campus gardens last week.
The group runs a program called EduGrow, which grants money to schools and 4-H clubs in the Morgan Hill, Gilroy and Hollister areas.
This year, the club awarded $500 to Tres Pinos School on Feb. 25 and the group will give a second grant to San Benito High School. Fleurs members Pat Slatten and Sally Biersdorff joined Teacher Nancy Wilcox and Principal Luciano Medeiros in presenting the award at Tres Pinos School.
“One of the students came up to me and gave me a hug and thanked me for helping their school,” wrote Biersdorff in an email to the Free Lance. “It was very heartwarming.”
Installing deer-proof fencing is a “high priority” for the Tres Pinos campus, according to Biersdorff’s email. The school is accepting donations so it can install a fence that is eight feet high, she wrote.
School leaders plan to be able to harvest vegetable and herbs from this garden in their annual spring picnic.
