Local students who plan to go into the health care field have an opportunity to decrease their education costs. Applications for $10,000 in Hazel Hawkins Hospital Auxiliary Scholarships are due April 18.

Any San Benito County resident who is attending a school in the health-care field can apply for the scholarships. There is no minimum grade point average, but good citizenship is important.

A selection committee of six people will review applications and determine how many students receive scholarships and the value of the scholarships. The $10,000 is split among the winners, said Rosa Roberts, chairperson of the committee. Last year, 18 students applied, she said.

Roberts said the scholarship is important to students because it provides assistance and confidence.

“It gives them a little more support,” she said. “It encourages them – at least somebody is out there to help them a little bit.”

By April 18, students must turn in to Roberts by mail an application form, a list of three references and three letters of recommendation. Forms are available at Hazel Hawkins Hospital, Hazel Hawkins Clinic and San Benito High School.

Eligible candidates should be going into careers including, but not limited to, dental assistant, medical social worker, speech therapist, nurse practitioner or emergency medical technician.

The auxiliary has given out scholarships since the 1950s, Roberts said. The original amount was for $100, increasing to $500 in the 1970s, to $1,000 in 1984, $2,000 in 1985, $5,000 in 1995 and $10,000 in 2001.

Students still in college can reapply for the scholarship every year.

The scholarship can serve to recruit students to work at the hospital once they graduate in their field, Roberts said.

Packets should be mailed to Roberts at Hazel Hawkins Hospital Auxiliary Scholarship Committee, P.O. Box 405, Hollister, CA, 95023-0405.
