The pilot and crew of an S61 Sikorsky N model helicopter landed at the Hollister Municipal Airport May 6 to refuel on their way to fight the Santa Barbara wildfire.

As of May 13, 8,733 acres in the Northwest Mission Canyon and Santa Barbara city had burned, according to the Calfire Web site. Though the assessment of damage is ongoing, fire officials reported that 78 residences had been destroyed and 22 had been damaged. A total of 67 outbuildings had been destroyed and 69 outbuildings damaged. More than 500 homes are still threatened.

The fire was 80 percent contained Wednesday, and firefighters estimate they will have full containment by May 20. So far, 3,014 fire personnel have been involved in fighting the blaze at a cost of $15.5 million.

The fire started May 5, and the cause is still under investigation.
