El Teatro Campesino is one of the non-profits selected to be part of the “Silicon Valley Gives” online fundraising event on May 6. This one-day event gives donors an opportunity to more than double their contribution by way of a matching grant of up to $10,000. El Teatro Campesino has been creating original arts experiences to the local community, including free theatre performances in Gilroy, Hollister, and San Juan Bautista, since 1965.
In August, El Teatro Campesino will perform “Popol Vuh: Heart of Heaven.” This free, family-friendly outdoor pageant that tells the Mayan story of creation with large-scale puppetry, colorful costumes, stylized dance movement, and live music. This outdoor theatrical pageant is performed by a multi-generational and multi-ethnic company of artists comprised largely of local community members. The show is narrated in three languages-Spanish, English, and it’s original language Qui’che Maya. Performances will be held August 23, 24, 30, 31, and September 1 at the Soccer Field in San Juan Bautista, and on September 6t and 7 at Dunne Park in downtown Hollister. The show is presented outdoors audience members are encouraged to bring their own seating arrangement. Admission to all performances are free.
