The long-awaited closure to through traffic at the intersection of Airline Highway and Sunnyslope Road is set to start later today.
Council of San Benito County Governments’ Transportation Planning Manager Mary Dinkuhn confirmed that crews are finishing up “last-minute” preparations and should get started – prompting the closure and detour – later today.
The detour is expected to last until around Aug. 20 and will allow construction crews from Graniterock Pavex to complete one of the final steps in the $49 million Highway 25 bypass project.
COG’s detour allows traffic to proceed around the construction work by turning right in each direction, but not directly through the intersection. It also emphasizes the use of Ladd Lane and Hillock Drive to avoid congestion around the construction zone.
When opened, set for October, the bypass will reroute Highway 25 traffic through Hollister’s east side instead of downtown on San Benito Street.
The work had been scheduled to start in May. Officials delayed it several times so utility companies could move power lines that were in the way.
