Deeming the inaugural Hollister Airshow “a success” after it generated a profit, Airport Director Mike Chambless this week said the Memorial Day weekend event will return next year.
Approximately 4,000 people attended the air show, including 1,600 from outside the area. With just under $20,000 in revenue and $14,558 in expenses, the event generated $5,339 in profit.
“All in all it was a success,” Chambless told the Hollister City Council on Monday.
This year’s two-day event, funded by the city, was designed to promote the Hollister Municipal Airport. Saturday was the busiest day of the event, with 62 percent of the visitors attending that day.
Chambless said he proposes having “a very similar event next year,” though he would like to expand the number of aerobatic performers from four to six. Plans also include expansion of the flight time for performers to three to four hours – up from two-and a half this year.
The city has already budgeted for next year’s event, which Chambless hopes will include a practice day Friday for pilots. If that happens, he would like to invite local school children to attend the practice sessions for free.
Once again, alcohol will not be served at the event to keep permitting and insurance costs down, Chambless said.
Ruth Erickson, a member of the Hollister Airmen’s Association and the Experimental Aircraft Association, said both groups would “be delighted” to help with another air show.
