A Hollister man is among nine residents in Monterey or San Benito counties being recognized at the American Red Cross’ “Heroes Breakfast” event May 20.

Wade Armstrong of Hollister, a phlebotomist with Hazel Hawkins Memorial Hospital, will receive the “Medical Hero” honor for donating three-quarters of his liver to his niece Cheyenne Melville who has autoimmune hepatitis.

The Heroes Breakfast event is a “celebration of the spirit of humanitarianism, where ordinary people with extraordinary efforts are honored,” according to the organization.

Funds raised from the event and corporate sponsorships at the Fifth Annual Heroes Breakfast provide the Red Cross with money to support the programs and services such as disaster relief. It is set for 7 a.m. May 20 at the Embassy Suites in Seaside. There is a $111 requested donation for the breakfast.
