The county’s unemployment rate – traditionally high during winter months due to the agriculture industry here – rose from 18.5 percent in December and 15.1 percent the month prior to that, according to unemployment figures released Wednesday.

The figure gives San Benito County the sixth-worst unemployment rate in the state, according to the numbers. Colusa and Imperial counties had the worst rates, at 27.4 percent and 27.3 percent, respectively.

When broken down by city, meanwhile, Hollister’s unemployment rate was 23.4 percent for January, according to the state. San Juan came in with a 22.6 percent figure, while Aromas had 15.6 percent unemployment and the Ridgemark area was at 5.8 percent.
