the Oscars
From our Oscar vantage point on Hollywood and Highland we
watched in awe as the Los Angeles Police 400 strong galloped down
La Brea to Hollywood Boulevard. No horses, just 400 cops galloping.
They headed toward some protestors and with their sabers swinging
they lopped off arms, ears and heads like a scene from

Doctor Zhivago.

Wait a minute that was a scene from

Doctor Zhivago.

Must have had that great film on my mind as Julie Christie who
played Laura was once again nominated while the Doc himself, Omar
Sharif, was making local news when he called a Beverly Hills valet
a dumb Mexican. Aye chee waa waa.

From our Oscar vantage point on Hollywood and Highland we watched in awe as the Los Angeles Police 400 strong galloped down La Brea to Hollywood Boulevard. No horses, just 400 cops galloping. They headed toward some protestors and with their sabers swinging they lopped off arms, ears and heads like a scene from “Doctor Zhivago.” Wait a minute that was a scene from “Doctor Zhivago.” Must have had that great film on my mind as Julie Christie who played Laura was once again nominated while the Doc himself, Omar Sharif, was making local news when he called a Beverly Hills valet a dumb Mexican. Aye chee waa waa.

I loved Christie in Doctor Zhivago but that is about the only film of hers that won me over despite her previous win for the highly overrated “Darling” so I was yelling with delight that Marion Cotillard won for my second favorite film of the year, “La Vie En Rose,” the story of Edith Piaf, my all-time favorite singer and that includes Bernstein and Woodward.

“No Country for Old Men” was great and deserved its Best Picture from the five that were nominated. “Zodiac,” “3:10 to Yuma” and “The Assassination of Jesse James” were all better. Plus, when I saw “No Country” they lost the last reel and it ended with Tommy Lee Jones rambling on at the dinner table about … What? That was the ending. Aye chee waa waa I thought I was just a dumb Mexican.

Speaking of dumb Mexicans a judge in Hollywood sentences Dr. Zhivago, Omar Sharif, to pay a valet $318,000 for calling him a dumb Mexican. The valet was neither Mexican nor dumb but smart enough to get a lawyer and ear witnesses to testify hearing Omar making the remark and thus making a simple argument a hate crime.

As a kid growing up in Hollister we were always called dumb Mexicans or lazy Mexicans. The latter always amazed me as no one in Hollister circa 1950, 1960 worked harder than Mexicans. If only hate and race crimes were retroactive I’d be happy to be called a dumb Mexican. I are? Aye chee waa waa.

Best line in “No Country” involved character actress Beth Grant, who used to be a bank customer where my wife worked in San Francisco. The funny line was when a Mexican comes to her aid she remarks something to the effect that she had never seen a Mexican in a suit before. Aye chee waa waa.

I love reading newspapers but have no admiration for the Los Angeles Times, Washington Post or the New York Times who believe they run the country – despite the fact that they do. But I did love their smear against John McCain. It backfired big time and the day after the front page smear that even the Enquirer editor said he wouln’t run the McCain campaign had its largest day of contributions. The Times made the same mistake the Democrats made when Richard Nixon was running for president. They spread lies that Nixon was banging some Korean government official. The next day Nixon’s poll numbers went up as now people were perceiving him to be a human being. The New York Times gossip that McCain is bedding some hottie brought applause from men of all ages for the 70-year-old McCain. Way to go, John. Whether it is true or not.

Hillary Clinton reminds me of Richard Nixon but without his charm.

Finally the little old blue-haired lady has again cracked my witness protection anonymity and sent me this on my Internet machine: “Mr. Venzykulu, Mr. Venzykulu, since you moved to Hollywood you are clueless about Hollister.” To be honest when I lived in Hollister I was clueless about Hollister.
