‘Vertigo’ still makes me dizzy with joy
What is it about Hollister that makes out of town women want to
take off their clothes? A few months ago I wrote about that
Hollister police report that a lady from Gilroy was naked at the
downtown Hollister Bank of America. Now two women from Sunnyvale
and Mountain View were arrested after pumping gas at Hollister’s
Safeway while topless. The perverts really upset me. No, not the
naked ladies but the people who call the police to complain.

What is it about Hollister that makes out of town women want to take off their clothes? A few months ago I wrote about that Hollister police report that a lady from Gilroy was naked at the downtown Hollister Bank of America. Now two women from Sunnyvale and Mountain View were arrested after pumping gas at Hollister’s Safeway while topless. The perverts really upset me. No, not the naked ladies but the people who call the police to complain.

Did I miss a copy of the Pinnacle or Fifty Cent Lance? I haven’t seen any letters to the editor from the San Benito County Deputies or their spokesperson denouncing their fellow officer who shot and killed that unarmed man. Why just a few months ago when the San Juan Bautista City Councilman was arrested they couldn’t wait to write letters condemning him as they not only wanted to enforce the law but also be his judge and jury. Some deputies believe in “protect and serve” to mean to protect and serve just their own. Aye chee waa waa.

Hooray to Mark Lemmerman of the world famous LWD (Lemmerman Writing Dynasty) for an absolutely engrossing column about gross out “Creature Features” with host Bob Wilkins. When I owned a little book store near the theater district in San Francisco, Wilkins would drop by. He was anything but weird but even as popular as his television show was he was always talking about gong in real estate sales … now that really scared the hell out of me.

San Juan Bautista’s “Vertigo” did something “Wizard of Oz”, “Star Wars”, “Psycho”, Sound of Music, “It’s A Wonderful Life” plus 80 some other classic films couldn’t do! Alfred Hitchcock’s thriller with James Stewart, filmed in San Juan Bautista, broke into the coveted American Film Institute’s top 10 of the 100 best movies ever made. The three-hour CBS presentation of the event even surprised me. For years I have written that “Vertigo” and “The Searchers” with John Wayne were doing something few films ever do … get more critical respect as they age.

Every time I wrote about “Vertigo” and “The Searchers” friends would always point out my obvious bias. I grew up on John Wayne movies and as far as “Vertigo” goes, they would say it was because I was born in San Juan Bautista and baptized in the Mission which is the scene of one of the greatest film endings ever.

Well the prestigious AFI agreed with me big time. Ten years ago I was thrilled that “The Searchers” was number 96 as I didn’t think anyone but me thought it was a masterpiece. “Vertigo” surprised me then at being as high as 61 as when it was first released it was a big box office flop and critical bomb … except for me.

This time “The Searchers” with Natalie Wood searched its way to number 12 from 96. “Vertigo” from 61 to a dizzy number 9! Ten years from now I predict when they do the top 100 again that “Vertigo” will knock the over rated “Citizen Kane” from number 1.

Speaking of great entertainment, don’t miss “Beauty and the Beast” in Hollister July 19-22 and again on stage on July 26-29. The director and voice coach is one of the most talented men I have ever known and remember I have shaken hands with Zazu Pitts. Jim Achilles just also happens to be one of the great human beings I have considered a friend (he smartly denies he knows me). But Jim is not perfect and has one huge character flaw I cannot forgive. He is a minister and by choice.

That recent front page story in the Pinnacle brought tears to my thighs. Nettie Le Duc is one of the rare angels that God has allowed to walk among us. My first memories of Nettie include going to her home with her son when we were in grade school at Sacred Heart and sitting in their darkened front room watching a man in woman’s clothing. Every Tuesday night they would ask me over to watch Milton Berle on their 17-inch black-and-white radio with pictures. I felt so lucky but even more so because I was exposed not only to men in dresses but because they were such a loving family. Thank you Nettie and thank you God for loaning Nettie to Hollister. Do you have any more? Hollister could sure use more Netties.

And yes, I know about Mr. Hollister Big Shot and that woman. But why are you surprised? She knows every mattress in the county! Aye chee waa waa!
