Remember Barbara Walters

Before I get to the Barbara Walters star on the Hollywood walk of fame ceremony, as an atheist I have to admit that I talk to God and last Saturday he gave me an unmistakable sign about Friday’s column about the Corbins of Hollister. I questioned the business sense of investing your money in a one passenger car that is made in Hollister after the owners lost millions of local investors’ money with their previous foray into the one passenger car “The Sparrow.” I asked God why in the bible he said His eye is on the Sparrow. He replied “My eye was on the Sparrow but the Corbin’s eyes were on their own bank account and lifestyle.”

After my column on Friday, the Los Angeles Daily News hits my stoop, I keep telling him not to sit there. The front page has a picture of a great looking two passenger car soon to hit the United States now that it is a 10-year success in Europe and parts of Old York.

Unlike Corbin’s of Hollister, the two passenger car looks like a car not a tin can ready to be squashed. It can hit 90 mph and looks rugged and safe relying on a reinforced steel cage, four air bags and anti-lock brakes and at nearly the same price as it’s much smaller Corbin model. So what are you going to invest in? A tiny one passenger prototype with owners with a proven bankruptcy track record who lost millions of local investors’ money or a 10-year proven winner? Did I mention the two passenger car is made by Mercedes-Benz? Aye chee waa waa!

The Barbara Walters star on the Hollywood walk of fame brought back many fond memories as I grew up with Barbara first on the Today Show and then when she became the first woman to ever co-anchor the news. She was then called Barbara “wah wah” because of her accent which still pops up once in a while. I always had high regard for her but never was a fan of her post Oscar interviews which is always a ratings winner. She is very small and frail and reminds me of the last time I saw Bing Crosby in person. He was walking to a Christmas Show he was filming in San Francisco just a few blocks from our apartment. We were also heading for the same theatre when we spotted him on the arm of his much younger wife. He looked old, tired and bent over but both he and she gave us a warm smile and wave. When the curtain opened out ran a bouncy Bing Crosby with a smile and song that made him seem half the age we noticed outside of the theatre. The applause and audience is the opiate that serves the actor and Barbara Walters was the same. When she got out of her limo she looked like everyone’s great grandmother but once she hit the podium to thunderous applause she was again as young as I remember Barbara “wah wah” ever being. Of course she could just have been so happy that Rosie O’Donnell wasn’t in Hollywood but probably somewhere straddling three bar stools at some biker chick bar. Aye chee waa waa or wah wah?

Speaking of a journalist with a future, The Weekend Pinnacle’s High School Confidential Columnist, Lindsay Adamson from Hollister High answers her peers letter with answers most teens don’t want to hear. She is so honest that it leads me to believe that the teens wouldn’t even be asking the questions if they had parents who were as honest as Lindsay. Four aye chee waa waa’s for Lindsay and four more for those who hired her.

And Lindsay, don’t let it discourage you that I started writing when I was a freshman at Hollister High on the Baler.

Hooray to Governor Schwarzenegger for telling those in this country who don’t and won’t speak English to turn to English television once in a while. I had an uncle who I loved to visit because he had thousands of comic books as that is how he learned to speak English. He advanced from Batman and Robin and was soon reading blueprints and he built his own little home in Monterey. It took him over two years but he did it. Then went on to build more. Guess how much that home is worth now? You were my inspiration Tio Tony.

Hate to admit one of my guilty pleasures but I watch Family Feud. The question was name someone in history who had a great impact on mankind. Bill Clinton beat out Jesus by a wide margin. I don’t remember Clinton as particularly religious, wasn’t it Monica who was on her knees? Aye chee waa waa!
