The San Benito County Homeless Shelter Task Force is scrambling for funds after getting denied on a $120,000 grant application – money earmarked toward a new kitchen at the local migrant camp facility.

Shelter Manager Cindy Parr today noted how the organization had planned to tear down the old kitchen at the shelter Dec. 1, the day it opens for the winter season. She requested charitable help from the community and said if the organization doesn’t come up with necessary funds, it could result in the shelter closing.

“I don’t know what kind of money we need,” she said. “We were really counting on that grant.”

The next concern, she pointed out, is how to feed all the homeless citizens who use the shelter. She said there are no plans to hold off on tearing down the old kitchen.

San Benito County had received the same grant in prior years, but didn’t come close to getting it in 2008, Parr said. She noted how 34 municipalities applied, eight received it and 16 other applications were ahead of San Benito County.
