Hollister – The county may be closer than ever to getting a temporary winter homeless shelter, but local leaders and nonprofit groups still need all the community help they can get to make it happen.

San Benito County Supervisor Pat Loe, Hollister City Councilmen Brad Pike and Doug Emerson, and representatives from nonprofits Marley Holte Dinners and Fishes and Loaves had hoped to announce the location of a winter shelter today at a homeless task force meeting. But there are still a few hurdles the group needs help clearing, Loe said.

“We still really feel that we are going to have something ready for next winter. But there’s some liability insurance issues with the location that we have, and we need a nonprofit to support it,” Loe said yesterday.

The task force is hoping to have a shelter set up at the migrant labor camp off of Southside Road in time for next winter, but doesn’t have the insurance to cover it, Loe said. There is the possibility of getting a grant, but not until the details are worked out.

“We’re hoping to get a grant, but until we get everything nailed down, we can’t even apply for the grant,” said Loe, who added the deadline for filing the grant application was in about three weeks. “So if there’s anybody who’s interested or knows a nonprofit with liability insurance that wants to help, I would encourage them to come to the meeting.”

Today’s meeting will be held at 2pm in the board of supervisors’ chambers at 481 4th Street.
