San Benito County non-profit organizations will honor the local philanthropists who help make them run on Nov. 15, designated as local Philanthropy Day.

A luncheon sponsored by the Community Foundation for San Benito County, will feature numerous non-profit organizations that will select and honor certain local philanthropists. The luncheon will be held from noon to 1:30 p.m. at San Juan Oaks Golf Club.

With the federal government downsizing and the state budget crunch, charities have to rely more on individual contributions said, Gary Byrne, the foundation’s executive director.

“It’s really impressive seeing so many people give back to the community in so many ways,” Byrne said. “A lot of organizations are feeling the pinch that there’s a lot of downsizing all over and economy is not that good. Non-profit organizations are relying more on donations and people have been rising to the occasion and have been extremely generous.”

Some of the organizations scheduled to attend the event are the YMCA of San Benito County, the American Red Cross, the American Cancer society, the Girl Scouts, Hollister Youth Alliance, Jovenes de Antano, San Benito Stage Company, Second Harvest Food Bank, the United Way, Hospice of the Central Coast and the Hollister Exchange Club.

The event has doubled in size from last year, Byrne said.

In 2001, Americans contributed nearly $212 billion to more than a million non-profit organizations registered with the Internal Revenue Service, he said.
