SAN JUAN BAUTISTA
Despite controlling an early lead on Monday night, the Anzar boys basketball team eventually wore down in the second half before falling late 45-42 to visiting Greenfield in a non-league matchup in San Juan Bautista.
Andres Gomez delivered a game-high 21 points for Anzar, which grabbed a 15-5 lead in the first quarter and took a 25-17 lead to the break.
But after a back-and-forth third quarter supplied the Hawks with a seven-point lead entering the final period, Greenfield managed to take control in the fourth quarter.
It outscored Anzar 19-9 in the final stanza.
“We actually had a big lead in the first quarter and we were ahead at halftime. But they started to wear us down (in the second half),” Anzar head coach Ed Cecena said. “It was a good effort, though.”
The shorthanded Hawks had just three scorers in the game. With Gomez leading the way, Jesse Ramirez contributed 12 points in the game, while Nick Salgado chimed in with nine points.
Meanwhile, Sal Flores led the Bruins with 15 points and Abel Pacheco added 13.
Anzar is now 0-6 overall on the season.
Before taking a holiday break, the Hawks will play at San Jose High on Wednesday. Tip-off is 6 p.m.
