I was disappointed to learn that Herman Wrede will no longer be writing his column for the Free Lance, ending his 35-year affiliation with the paper.

My dealings with Herman date back to my high school days, when he corrected papers for my Senior English teacher. Later, I had the good fortune of working with him at the Free Lance.

Though I never told him so, I appreciated his knowledge of history, his corny jokes, his love of journalism, his ability to find a free meal and his uncanny ability to remember birthdays of everyone from actors to editors to local politicians.

I hope his words will again grace the pages of a local newspaper.

Congratulations, Herman, on a long career.
