For anyone who thinks Hollister has lost its small-town feel, we encourage you to step back in time and attend the events at the 72nd Annual San Benito Saddle Horse Show and Rodeo this week.

There was some ropin’ and ridin’ last weekend, but for many, the festivities will begin at 6:15pm tomorrow when people line San Benito Street to watch the Horse Parade march through town. As the parade floats pass by, the streets will be filled with people who turn out to witness the popular annual event. Kids will be waving, parents smiling and the community will be having fun – together.

Then, beginning on Friday, Bolado Park will host a weekend full of activities ranging from a Western Arts show to a rodeo full of talented cowboys exhibiting their skills and reminding showing us that we have not strayed far from our rural roots. It’s a great display of the area’s community spirit and character.

This is a story far removed from the news of crime, budget problems and political antics that often dominate our front page headlines. It’s our responsibility as a community newspaper to tackle the tough, and sometimes unpleasant, stories, but we enjoy and cherish the opportunity to focus on what makes San Benito County a unique treasure in the California landscape. With growth comes change, and often the change is a loss of the past to make way for the future. But this weekend, our agrarian roots will be embraced as they have been for 72 years.

So, whether you’re a newcomer in town, or have been here for generations, take time to participate in this event, which lends our county a truly unique flavor.

For more information about the parade, call the San Benito Chamber of Commerce at 637-5315 and for info on the Saddle Show and Horse Rodeo, call Bolado Park at 628-3545. Event information is available at www.sanbenitocountyfair.com.
