Hollister – Hollister School District has named Michael Slater interim business director, after the departure of Dean Bubar, who accepted a similar position with Los Banos Unified District.

Slater is currently the interim business director for North County Joint Union School District and has made a career in educational finances. Although he is retired, he was the chief business officer for Larkspur School District and prior to that worked as a budget analyst at the California Department of Education. He will start at the district Jan. 17.

Hollister School District officials said they were glad to fill the position so quickly after Bubar’s departure at the end of last year because business directors are hard to come by in the field of education.

“There aren’t many business directors around because they are in high demand,” said Bill Jordan, director of personnel. “And there is a lot to the job.”

As interim business director, Slater will oversee the budget and work with administration on ways to reduce spending, a crucial job at a time when the district is facing a budget deficit of over $800,000. Meanwhile, the district will be searching for a permanent replacement for Bubar and hopes to have the job filled by May.

Bubar had worked at Hollister School District since 1987, when he started as a business assistant. Over the years he worked his way up through the business department to become purchaser and facilities planner, manager and, eventually, director of business and operations. He was unavailable for comment on Tuesday.

“This really is a loss for our district,” said Judy Barranti, superintendent of Hollister School District.

Barranti said Bubar’s decision was mostly personal because he lives in Los Banos and has children who attend schools in that district.
