The chemistry between Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey is the best part of the new movie “How to Lose a Guy in 10 days,” currently playing at Premiere Cinemas.
The lightweight romantic comedy is enjoyable, but far from being great.
My reservations about this film have nothing to do with it being marketed as some sort of “chick flick.” There are parts that will appeal to audience members of both genders.
As a longtime fan of the genre – which made stars out of actors such as Cary Grant, David Niven, Spencer Tracy and Jack Lemmon – I’m always on the lookout for a good one.
This movie had the potential to be so much better than it is because of the ease with which McConaughey and Hudson relate to each other on screen, even though the 33-year-old McConaughey is 10 years older than Hudson.
The problem with this movie is its predictability, and the script doesn’t really showcase the talents of either lead actor.
“How to” is set in New York, between characters Andie Anderson and Benjamin Barry. Anderson is a writer for a female-oriented magazine called “Composure.” She writes pieces like “How to Get a Better Bod in 5 Days” and “How to Feng-Shui Your Apartment.”
Yearning to write write something serious, Andie takes on a story about dating don’ts with the understanding that if she does well, she can write about more socially relavent issues.
At about the same time, Ben – an advertising executive – makes a bet with his boss that he could make any woman fall in love with him in 10 days, to prove he understands women and to land an expensive account.
The movie then goes into a series of all-too-predictable gags and situations. Fortunately for the filmmaker, they squeeze a few funny scenes out of this lackluster movie.
