– The Central Coast Counties Walnut Institute will be held from
8:30 a.m.-noon on Friday, March 7, in the Veterans Memorial
Building, 649 San Benito St., Hollister.
The free meeting is open to the public. Among the topics will be
pesticide regulation updates, pest management guidelines, walnut
husk fly effects on quality, the UC Davis walnut breeding program,
walnut research update, codling moth management with pheromone
mating disruption and walnut marketing activities. Department of
Pesticide Regulation continuing education credits are available. No

Students raise money for travel

HOLLISTER – Weather permitting, the International Travelers of San Benito High School, who will be visiting Spain, London or Costa Rica, will host a rummage sale on Sat., March 1, from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. in front of the high school tennis courts.

Witness history

SAN JUAN BAUTISTA – The San Juan Historical Society will be hosting a meeting Saturday, March 1, at Dona Esther’s Restaurant. The event will include a social hour at 11 a.m. when visitors may purchase a copy of “San Juan Bautista” by Carla Henderson and Joe McMahon. At 11:30 a.m. menu orders will be taken for lunch. The highlight of the event will be a presentation by Emily Renzel about one of the nation’s oldest landmarks, La Casa De Anza adobe.

Retired teachers to hold luncheon meeting

HOLLISTER – The next meeting of the local chapter of California Retired Teachers is scheduled for Wednesday, March 5, beginning at 10:30 a.m. at Paine’s restaurant. A luncheon will follow the meeting. This month’s guest speaker was not determined at press time.

Monthly blood drive scheduled

Crafters needed

HOLLISTER – The Ladies Auxiliary, Veterans of Foreign War Post No. 9242 is looking for crafters for their spring craft show, March 15. The show will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Veterans Memorial Building, 649 San Benito St.

Independent study program accepting applications

HOLLISTER – San Benito High School’s Independent Study program is now accepting applications for the fall 2008 semester. The program is geared for students whose needs may be best met through study outside the regular classroom setting. Each students meets once a week for a one-on-one meeting with a teacher, and may also participate in small group tutorial sessions.

Free income tax service available

HOLLISTER – The American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) Tax-Aide program offers free personal tax counseling and preparation assistance to all taxpayers of low to middle income, with special attention to those ages 60 and older. Beginning Tuesday, Feb. 12 through Thursday, April 10, volunteers will be available by appointment only to those who need help preparing their taxes. Appointments can be made on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1-4 p.m. Appointments will be held at the Hollister Community Center, 300 West St.

Participants should bring in all tax documents they receive in the mail, last year’s tax return and all relevant information on income and expenses. Volunteer counselors are not trained to assist in preparing tax returns that report business, rental or partnership income. Club Ed tutors available

HOLLISTER – San Benito High School Club Ed tutors are available to work with high school students in grades 9 through 12 in a variety of subjects. Tutors work one on one with students Monday-Thursday between 3 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Some tutors are bilingual. Oriana to hold spring rehearsals

HOLLISTER – The Oriana Chorale will hold weekly rehearsals for its upcoming spring concert Mondays beginning at 7:15 p.m. at the Trinity Lutheran Church. Rehearsals will be under the direction of Bruce Olstad and the chorale will be singing a medley of songs from Broadway musicals and Frostiana. All singers are welcome. Transitional home has room

HOLLISTER – Bridge of Hope, a faith-based transitional home, is accepting new clients. Bridge of Hope offers a transitional residence offering safety, dignity and structure for women. It emphasizes spiritual and emotional growth and support, while offering a way to make a successful transition back to their families and society.

Schools act on beef recall

HOLLISTER – A recent federal recall of Hallmark/Westland brand beef touched down at local schools.

When the U.S. Department of Agricuture ordered the recall on Feb. 18, Hollister School District staff inventoried its supply, and discovered two cases of meat covered by the recall. The cases were promptly disposed of.
