Time for burn permits
HOLLISTER – The new year means that it’s time to renew burning permits, according to James Dellamonica, captain with Cal Fire/San Benito County Fire Department.
The fire department issues two types of permits in San Benito County. The first is a residential permit for backyard burning of yard trimmings and the like. The residential burn season started on Dec. 1, 2008 and ends April 30. A new permit is needed each year.
Burn hours are 6-11 a.m., and only on prescribed burn days as required by the Monterey Bay Unified Air Pollution Control District, which can be reached for questions at 647-9411.
Agricultural burn permits are intended for farmers so they can dispose of orchard prunings and rotate crops. Permit-holders must be in areas zoned agricultural and give five or more planted acres of crops. The permit is valid for a calendar year, Jan. 1 to Dec. 31. Ag burn hours are 8 a.m.-5 p.m. on burn days.
