Pinnacles burn set

PAICINES – The staff at Pinnacles National Monument plan to burn 160 acres along newly acquired lands.

Depending on weather conditions, the burns are expected to take place within the next two weeks. The targeted area is along Highway 146 near the park’s eastern entrance.

The area includes a large infestation of non-native yellow star-thistle. The aggressive weed coves some 12 million acres of the California landscape. Three consecutive years of burning, combined with other integrated plant management techniques, can control the plant. Burning is expected to reduce the number of seeds and add nutrients that can stimulate growth of native plants.

The burns are only conducted when winds are light and the air is not too dry.

To receive an email when the burn day is confirmed, contact the park at 389-4486, ext. 222 or email de**********@np*.gov.

Pet Friends continues spay/neuter programs

HOLLISTER – An anonymous donation has allowed Pet Friends of Hollister to continue its local spay/neuter program. Discount coupons are now available in the amount of $20 or $35 to spay/neuter a cat, or $40 to alter a dog. A $30 coupon is also available for those caregivers who are involved with a trap-neuter-return to help with the cost of spaying or neutering feral cats. Anyone interested in receiving a coupon or seeking additional information should call the Pet Friends message line at 634-1191 and leave a name and telephone number so a volunteer can return the call.
