The county’s top law enforcer must be a person of integrity and sound moral character. Even more important, the person sitting as San Benito County District Attorney should have vast experience with many types of cases and the organizational experience to run an office and supervise a staff of attorneys and investigators.

For these reasons, The Pinnacle endorses John Sarsfield in the District Attorney’s race. Sarsfield is a Deputy District Attorney in Monterey County who has lived with his wife and children in Hollister for 10 years. After graduating from law school at Santa Clara University, he served as a military prosecutor in the JAG office at Fort Ord. As a Monterey County prosecutor, he has handled a variety of cases, including homicide, white-collar crime, environmental crime, juvenile crime and juvenile gang enforcement, asset forfeiture, code enforcement and narcotics. He has worked with grand juries, which is part of the D.A.’s duties, has written indictments and has successfully lobbied the state legislature for bills he wrote that stiffen truancy laws and legalize raffles for charity.

In short, his breadth of experience is unmatched in this race.

Opponent Art Cantu is a career defense attorney who sought the county Public Defender’s job when Patrick Marshall resigned 1½ years ago. While he has had troubles in his personal life, most troubling has been his negative campaign tactics that have distorted facts about his opponent. Our experience has been that candidates run negative campaigns about an opponent when they lack positive things to say about themselves.

The public must have trust in its district attorney, and truthfulness, accuracy and honesty are the most important attributes a person can bring to the office.

The Pinnacle endorses John Sarsfield in the race for District Attorney.
