In line for an appointment as board chairman at Tuesday’s meeting, Supervisor Reb Monaco noted how there are many issues officials must resolve and that his biggest concern is the state budget’s effect on San Benito County.
San Benito County supervisors at their 9 a.m. Tuesday meeting are set to appoint a new chairman for the next year who will succeed Supervisor Anthony Botelho in the seat. The five board members routinely have elected the prior year’s vice chairman as chairman the following year. Monaco has been in the vice chairman role during Botelho’s tenure in 2009.
“We have a lot of issues that are still in the works, things need we need to resolve,” said Monaco, who will be board chairman for the second time. “My overall concern is the budget. It’s crippling the counties what the state’s doing to us.”
Monaco pointed out how supervisors in the past year had to adopt a more flexible approach than usual toward the budget due to continued state cuts, which forced reductions at the local level. He expects that to continue during 2010 as well, he said. The goal is “basically, keeping the county financially solvent,” he said.
“This board has been very committed to that,” he said. “We’ve done a decent job. The state at this particular time is certainly not our ally.
Supervisors at the outset of Tuesday’s meeting are set to elect the new chairman and vice chairman. Following that, supervisors are slated to receive committee appointments. Monaco said he spoke to other supervisors and he will keep most of those appointments the same as in 2009.
