What a great feeling to see the Veterans Hall filled with people on Tuesday, Feb. 15. In a world that seems chaotic and overwhelming on a national and international level, we, the people, can make a difference in our communities.

That was proven on Tuesday, when the response of ordinary people like me to the planned “casino takeover” was a resounding “No” – aptly expressed by our sheriff and many other residents. I applaud the majority of our supervisors who, after careful consideration of the facts of gambling in our community, expressed their decisions to vote against the proposal.

This, of course, will not prevent the out of town promoters from continuing their campaign. We must not let our guard down. Let’s form a citizens’ committee to help the city and county research and promote sane, safe and sustainable businesses in our area that pay decent wages with opportunities for advancement.

We must also work for excellent education for everyone who desires it. Let’s contribute our time in our libraries, YMCA’s and schools (if only an hour a week) and help those who need it, both kids and adults in developing literacy skills and technical skills without which “good jobs” are a fantasy.
