The Free Lance has learned a second report is coming on alleged corruption in San Benito County government and it doesn’t look pretty.

This doesn’t mean everyone in our fine county should be alarmed over what apparently has been overlooked for many years.

But it is also time for those who have turned their heads or shrugged their shoulders at these harmful abuses of power to realize those days are – or should be – a part of the past.

There is nothing cute or colorful about corruption.

It steals our hard-earned tax dollars for the benefit of a few. It can also ruin many hard-working citizens who failed to fall in line or follow the shady footsteps of those who use money and greed to get their way.

This is also a warning to those who have protected those who have overstepped their authority because of political or financial alliances. You are just as guilty.

The group of local citizens “Los Valientes” – which started this investigation – should come forward and identify themselves.

And we remain steadfast in making sure that innocent people do not get their names smeared by false charges or allegations.

But what looked like a flimsy and veiled attempt to knock the Slow Growth Measure off of the March ballot box – which we strongly oppose as well – is starting to uncover much more than was expected.

The Free Lance is not controlled by anyone except the people of this county and community. We are the hometown daily newspaper with a responsibility to report the news, as unpleasant as that task can be at times.

We are also a forum for your voices and opinion, some of which can now be heard and shared without fear of reprisal.

The contents of the first investigation were reported fairly and accurately. The second part will be as well.

We are confident the vast majority of San Benito County citizens, young and old, longtime and newcomers, want an accountable and legal government process to help improve the quality of our daily lives.

This is happening each day with so many good people who have devoted so much of their time and energy in the local government sectors.

But we all want to know where our hard-earned tax dollars are going and how they are spent.

We want those who have abused their positions at the expense of others to face the consequences in the judicial system that has made this country so strong.

Please let us know your thoughts as we proceed to inform the good people of San Benito County on this potentially perilous journey into the not-so-distant political past.
