And all five players were key contributors to the victory.
Cynthia Pinto, Nicole Donley and Sabrina Murphy were solid with the ball handling against Hartnell’s full court pressure. Murphy, Jenn Tremblay and Lacey Byers came up with key rebounds inside.
“We are extremely proud of the way Nicole, Sabrina, Lacey, Jenn and Cynthia played,” said coach Mike Girardi. “They all rose to the occasion and contributed in their own ways. It was a true team effort.”
Pinto scored 17 points, including two free throws with 27 seconds remaining to make the three point difference. Tremblay scored 14 points, and Nicole Donley added 13, including three three-pointers during the 21-3 Gavilan run late in the first half. The Rams took a 32-22 halftime lead.
“Our players are understanding their roles very well right now,” Girardi said. “We passed the ball around really well, and our defense was strong at key times. This is a great way to go into the winter break.”
Currently Gavilan is ranked No. 3 in the state in team defense out of the 87 schools with women’s basketball programs. The Rams are allowing an average of 49 points per game.
Gavilan’s record is now 5-4 overall and 2-0 in conference play. The Rams’ next game is Jan. 7 at home against Cabrillo College at 7 p.m.
