Arrest Coverage Unfair to Dias
Arrest Coverage Unfair to Dias

Editor,

Regarding the story “San Juan Councilman Arrested for Assault” (April 17):

I think it is ridiculous that everyone has allowed the incident surrounding the arrest of San Juan Bautista City Councilman George Dias to get so out of hand.

George is my uncle and I feel that he is getting more press and news time than a child molester or a rapist. I don’t find this fair and I believe it is an attack on the Dias family, especially George.

George was just trying to help protect his property, which was burning! Anyone, especially if you have been a firefighter your entire life would have done the same.

As for him beating up a police officer, that is a joke. I am sure George was frustrated and upset that he was being given a hard time for being on his own property but the police officer should not have allowed the situation to become physical.

I believe the whole situation should have been approached differently. I also the think that it is complete slander of George’s name by putting this story on the front page of the papers and plastering his picture all over the TV.

It was an unfortunate event that should have never taken place. And by bringing up his past arrest which can I add was three years ago and has no relevance, was also ridiculous. That was no one’s business but his own.

I wish George the best with this ordeal and in his continued success as a San Juan Bautista city councilman.
