Giving One Gang ‘Special Attention and Favors’ Isn’t Fair
Giving One Gang ‘Special Attention and Favors’ Isn’t Fair
Editor,
I completely agree with the letter from Jocelyn Jordan about the favoritism of the sureno gang members by Hollister law enforcement.
Whenever a labeled nortano and a labeled sureno get into a fight, it is only the nortano that gets arrested. Whenever these surenos provoke fights and then get beaten up, they retaliate by calling the police and portraying themselves as the victims. The police label these surenos as the victims because the surenos tell them whatever they want to know.
What about the sureno that was arrested for those drive-by shootings? He was let go with no charges, for supposedly a lack of evidence?
Is our probation department and police department adding to our gang problem?
And what about Judge Tobias? Is he in on all of this favoritism too? Isn’t he the one with the final say?
Let’s not forget the schools, the way they are always giving these surenos special attention and favors. The counselors at San Benito High, San Andreas and Pinnacles often stick up for the surenos, drive them around and allow them to wear blue.
What kind of a system is this?

Freight Keeps Our Highways Moving in Swift Direction
Editor,
As a rail fan, I think it is unfortunate that Amtrak suffers delays. But I am also a fan of rail freight. Amtrak has an organization that makes sure we are aware of their plight, but they pay almost nothing for track maintenance, let alone upgrades. Union Pacific and BNSF are spending their increased revenues on improving their most important routes, adding double track in many areas. The good news is that they are keeping our highways moving by hauling the heavy freight that would otherwise be in trucks that can barely get up to the speed limit. One good example is the hundreds of carloads of rock that move out of Aromas by rail every week on the UP coast line – the equivalent of thousands of truck loads. We should be very glad that this rock is not moving on Highway 101.
