McKinnon Lumber’s Service Wins Customer’s Loyalty
McKinnon Lumber’s Service Wins Customer’s Loyalty

Editor,

I am writing this letter in response to your Dec. 1 editorial, “Let’s Stop the Retail Leakage.”

It is a little late but I feel this needs to be said and hope you print this.

In the article in passing you mention that Hollister retailers need to find their niche with things like service.

There is such a business downtown and it is McKinnon Lumber.

I moved to Hollister 13 years ago and knew no one. One day I needed some lumber and stopped in to McKinnon Lumber.

The owner, John Barrett, greeted me and I told him what I wanted and why I wanted it.

He then suggested I was a little off and proceeded to tell me what I needed and why what he suggested would be a better solution.

Because of his sincerity and honesty my instincts told me to trust him and he was right.

From then on I have gone to McKinnon Lumber for all my construction needs.

I have seen many of his staff come and go over the years and they all are courteous and treat me just like he does.

There have been many times when I needed something cut or some non-standard item and in every case John has come though.

If he does not have an item he will find it and get it for me.

Once without me asking he loaned me a sheet rock ladder so I could hang the sheetrock on my garage ceiling.

I have spent enough time at McKinnon Lumber to observe John doing this for everyone.

This is why I have gone to McKinnon Lumber for anything I think he may have to sell and I don’t really care what it costs. I know he is not the cheapest around but I know his prices are fair.

McKinnon Lumber and the Barrett family are the example you are looking for. They treat you like your business matters and service is king.

It would be very wise for some of the other downtown businesses to provide this kind of service as service breeds loyalty and it works both ways.
