System for Distribution of Highway Funding Is Flawed
System for Distribution of Highway Funding Is Flawed
Editor,
In a recent Free Lance editorial, it was suggested that if San Benito County is to receive highway bond funds for roads, the county should hire a lobbyist to help us secure funds.
Although a lobbyist might be helpful, other options should also be considered.
The current system of distributing highway bond funds is, in my opinion, flawed and unfair to rural cities and counties.
Our local elected officials and voters must lobby our elected representatives in Sacramento to implement some basic reforms on how highway bond funds are distributed.
We must convince them to introduce legislation that would ensure a more equitable distribution of highway funds.
Small rural cities and counties must be on an equal footing with larger cities and counties, and must receive their fair share of highway bond money.
The distribution of bond funds must not continue to be a political game, where the needs of rural cities and counties are ignored.
If the current system is not reformed by our Legislature, the City of Hollister and San Benito County will continue to be shut out when it comes time to distributing future highway bond money.

Ask Questions When Kids Come Home With New Things
Editor,
Attention parents: What are your kids doing?
Help me explain to my son, who graduated from high school, put himself through college with the help of his mom and works hard only to have his car stolen and then broken into.
I grew up in San Jose and he visits his girlfriend on the San Jose/Campbell border and this happens in this neighborhood constantly.
I appeal to us parents to talk to our kids, and when they come home with money or property and they aren’t working, have that light bulb go off in your head and question them.
Nothing is worse than having your personal belongings stolen, and for those of you thieves out there, shame on you.
