MACE’s Man of the Year Earned the Recognition
MACE’s Man of the Year Earned the Recognition
Editor,
After reading your wonderful article on Manny Chavez the MACE man of the year (“Celebrating Culture and Youth,” May 5), I wanted to just echo some of your comments.
I have known and worked with Manny for many years at the high school. I have known him in the capacity of parent, coaching colleague, bus driver and friend.
Manny has always put the kids first, and we have all benefited from it.
I want to share a specific story that happened this year during wrestling season. I submitted the wrong date for a tournament, and when called, Manny came on short notice and drove us to Del Mar High School in San Jose, staying until nearly 11pm one day after having the flu. Never complaining, and always supporting the ‘Balers.
I hope the whole town of Hollister recognizes his contributions both on and off the field. His life story is one that we all should be proud of. San Benito High School graduate, Baler athlete, U.S. veteran, CHP officer, community volunteer, school bus driver, and maybe most importantly great father.
Two of his daughters teach physical education at the high school, and Manny Jr. coaches basketball at the high school. They will be impacting lives in a positive fashion long after we are retired.
I’m proud to know Manny and call him a friend.

Reporter Captured Subject in Story About Volunteer
Editor,
Many thanks for the wonderful article and picture of Bruce Green (“Hollister Volunteer Can’t Stay Out of the Classroom,” May 2).
In the article, Alice Joy captured the person Bruce Green is and his love of children and education.
The “How to Help” should prove to be beneficial in obtaining more school volunteers.
