As strange as this may sound, maybe it is the putter’s fault that you keep missing so many putts. There are three types of putting strokes: a straight back shot with straight follow through, a slightly inside backstroke and follow through, and a strong inside backstroke and strong inside follow through, which is similar to a door hinge.

There are also three designs for putter heads with weights that match the three putting strokes.

Balance the putter shaft on your finger and look to see what way the putter head is facing. If the putter head is facing up, the face is balanced to putt straight back and straight through. But if the putter head is at a 45-degree angle, it’s made for a slightly inside to inside stroke. Finally, if the putter head is toe down, it is used for the strong inside to inside stroke.

If the putter head does not match your putting stroke, you are fighting yourself on every putt. For more help determining which putter is best for your putting stroke, swing by Ridgemark Golf and Country Club and have one of our certified fitter help you.

Watch us on Thursday night

Starting in January, Ridgemark Golf and Country Club will host golf tips during the evening newscast of KION 46 and KCBA 35. The tip from this column will be highlighted on the show.

As we give helpful tips, our hope to feature our teaching professionals, the beauty of all 36 holes of Ridgemark and to draw more business to San Benito County.

Ridgemark will also run a 15-second advertisement after every tip. So please tune in to the local newscasts and enjoy the golf tips.

It is quite an honor to be on the local CBS and FOX television stations. If you watch on cable, KION 46 is on channel 5 and KCBA 35 is on channel 8.

Last-minute shopping for golfers

We are down to our last days of shopping so here are my final suggestions to score with the family on Christmas Day.

One of the best gifts for a golf lover is some golf lesson from his or her’s favorite golf course. Also, new golf shoes, which always exchangeable for the correct size or style, can also be a good gift. For a big impression, buy some new rain gear. If that’s not enough, tickets to the AT&T Pro-Am at Pebble Beach are also available.

Also a golf vacation, with gift certifications, is also a good gift and getaway. But also you can invest in a staycation at Ridgemark. The package includes a night’s stay and two rounds of golf.
