GOP backs primary status quo
HOLLISTER – The San Benito County Republican Party has taken the position to support the resolution to be before the February 6 meeting of the San Benito County Board of Supervisors that is in opposition to change the presidential primary to February 2008.
Support for the change in the date of the presidential primary centered on two items:
– The early primary would give California a meaningful voice in selecting the nominees for president. Without the change in date, the nominating process could easily be settled by the June 2008 California primary. Thus, an earlier date could make California’s positions relevant in the nominating process.
– The second item is a report that the Democratic National Committee will strip the California delegation to the 2008 Democrat National Convention of between 90 and 100 delegates if the California presidential primary is moved to February 2008. The Democratic National Committee should not try to dictate California election policies.
Opposition to the change in the date of the presidential primary had a single issue.
– There is an effort in Sacramento to have a referendum to modify term limits of our legislatures. Changing the date of the presidential primary would provide a vehicle to allow a vote on possible changes in term limits in February 2008. If the term limit vote passed, the termed-our assemblymen and senators could then be on the June primary ballot. The term limit law is too important to be put in jeopardy by changing the date of the presidential primary election.
The San Benito County Republican Party does not minimize the importance of the selection of the nominees for President of the United States. However, the party has taken the position that protection of term limits is more important than a possible one-time influence on selection of the nominees for president.
