SJB Prepares for Beard Contest
SJB Prepares for Beard Contest
San Juan Bautista – San Juan Bautista, a city rich with history, is about to revive a long-forgotten tradition – the Whiskerino.
That’s right, a beard-growing contest.
The beards will be unveiled at the Old West Fun and Arts Festival on April 22. However, locals hoping to show off their facial hair need to register on Jan. 31 at either Daisy’s Saloon or the Pizza Factory. Participants must to be clean-shaven when they register, which means mutton chops, goatees, neck hair, chin hair, mustaches and even back hair that’s visible above the collar will have to go.
People are allowed to join after the start date, but latecomers will have less time to get their whiskers into tip-top shape.
So what makes a beard stand head-and-shoulders above the rest? The contest judges have not been finalized, but according to the rules, “Winning beards will be determined by a variety of criteria, all arbitrary and at the sole discretion of the Whiskerino judges.”
Councilman George Dias plans to toss his hat in the ring, and he hopes that other elected officials will follow suit. Dias said he doesn’t have any specific plans or goals for his beard, save one.
“The uglier, the better,” he said.
Raid Nets $2,400 Worth of Meth
Hollister – Three Hollister women were arrested by United Narcotic Enforcement Team agents Thursday afternoon in a house raid that turned up $2,400 worth of crystal methamphetamine.
Kathleen Marie Tanner, 41, and Corina Marie Hernandez, 29, were arrested by UNET agents on suspicion of methamphetamine sales, a felony, and being under the influence of a controlled substance, a misdemeanor, according to agents. Tanner was also arrested on felony child endangerment.
Christina Cortez, 21, was arrested on suspicion of being under the influence of a controlled substance, a misdemeanor, and possession of methamphetamine, a felony, according to agents.
UNET agents entered Tanner’s home in the 900 block of South Street at approximately 2:15pm Thursday on a search warrant, agents said.
Methamphetamine smoke permeated the home and a 3-year-old girl was taken into custody by Child Protective Services, agents said.
Agents found approximately six grams of crystal methamphetamine which, according to UNET, could be made into $2,400 worth of drugs by mixing it with baking soda.
Baggies, scales, a dagger, a ninja throwing star, ammunition and a bag of prescription pain pills were also taken as evidence, agents said.
There were also $40,000 worth of code violations found at the home, such as faulty smoke detectors, agents said.
Tanner and Hernandez are being held at the San Benito County Jail in lieu of bail of $69,000 and $18,000, respectively, according to jail personnel. Cortez was released on bail.
