morning outside Krazy Koyote bar in Gilroy. No injuries were
reported, but four Hollister men were arrested in connection with
the fight.
Gilroy – A fight involving at least 15 people broke out early Saturday morning outside Krazy Koyote bar in Gilroy. No injuries were reported, but four Hollister men were arrested in connection with the fight.
Jose Luis Jaime, 21; Samuel Canela, 20; and Thomas Venegas, 20, were arrested for fighting in public at about 2am Saturday. The fourth man was a 17-year-old juvenile.
According to police, an officer patrolling the area near closing time spotted a group of people throwing punches and Krazy Koyote security guards trying to break up the fight. He called for backup and waited as 12 additional Gilroy Police Department, California Highway Patrol and Santa Clara County Sheriff’s units arrived.
A crowd of about 100 formed outside to watch as two more fights broke out.
“The problem is you never know what’s going to happen with a big crowd,” Sgt. Robert-Locke-Paddon said. “If they get involved, we could be outnumbered.”
Security guards and police worked together to untangle the brawl. Within six minutes the fight was quelled and individuals were being questioned, police said.
“Krazy Koyote security did a pretty good job,” Sgt. Wes Stanford said. “They’re really starting to do a good job working with us.”
In the past, bar security and police have not been on the same page about expectations when an incident occurs or about capacity regulations, police said.
“We’ve really been working with the owners and their security, and our partnership is really starting to gel,” Stanford said.
The bar was not hosting a concert or band Friday night and the atmosphere prior to the fight was typical of normal Friday evening, police said.
“Any time you serve liquor (fights) are going to be a possible outcome,” Stanford said.
