The average teacher salary at San Benito County’s two largest
school districts last school year was below the state average of
$67,932, according to figures released by the California Department
of Education.
San Benito High School teachers made an average of $67,168 in
the 2009-2010 school year, while Hollister Elementary teachers
averaged $65,213. The SBHS number was the same as the previous
year, while the Hollister School District’s figure represented a
2.15 percent drop.

Statewide, teacher salaries increased 1.4 percent from 2009, with much of the increase in average teacher play attributed to districts laying off thousands of less-experienced, lower-paid teachers. Combined teacher payroll for all districts fell by about $600 million, or 3 percent.
The average teacher salary in the North County School District was $61,172, Aromas-San Juan Unified was $64,958 and Southside was $58,742. Average salaries for teachers in San Benito County’s smaller, rural districts ranged from $35,280 in Panoche to $59,490 in Tres Pinos.
