Hollister – The Hollister Police Department is investigating a fight across the street from San Benito High School that sent a local teen to the hospital Tuesday evening.
The teenager stood calmly near ‘Baler Alley at San Benito High School with blood running down his face from his head as police and other emergency officials responded to the incident at approximately 5:45pm. Authorities arrested two juvenile suspects and expect no other arrests, Hollister Police Sgt. Dan Winn said. Winn said the arrest of the suspects would not have been possible without Deputy Rich Brown, the school resource officer.
Medics treated the teenager on scene and wrapped his head with gauze before he was taken to Hazel Hawkins Memorial Hospital for further treatment.
Three San Benito High School juniors stood Tuesday evening in a yard across the street from the high school in the 1200 block of West Street.
The students declined to give names but said they didn’t feel safe at the school after the incident.
“This is the biggest thing that’s happened here in a while,” one 17-year-old said.
Winn said the incident involved two groups of teenage boys, possibly concerning the theft of a skateboard. Winn said he did not know what injuries the victim suffered before press time Tuesday. It was not immediately clear if weapons were used in the attack.
Authorities said there is no evidence the incident was gang-related.
Officers spent more than 30 minutes searching the ground and bushes of neighboring properties and the school campus with their flashlights. Authorities would not comment on what they were searching for.
While the two suspects were in custody, a woman came near the scene and began yelling at the officers. As a deputy moved one of the suspects into another patrol car the woman told the suspect, “Don’t worry, I’ll get you out of this,” and yelled obscenities and pointed at the officers.
Winn said there were witnesses who were cooperating.
