A group of students trying to raise money for a San Benito High School freshman diagnosed with cancer thought up a different kind of way to attract attention to the cause – by getting people around town to dance in front of the camera.

A handful of students behind the fundraising effort have a goal of bringing in $15,000 and had been collecting donations outside Safeway when a couple of them – the idea being spurred by a friend who had been dressed as Gumby while helping them at the grocery store – decided to have locals show off their dance moves.

They’re trying to help raise money to go toward freshman Diana Magana’s battle with cancer. They thought by having people act a little silly in front of the camera Friday – for a video that went on YouTube – it would show how much the community cares about her, said Ana Naranjo, a senior and one of the effort’s organizers.

“Not even having to ask for donations, but just to show what they would do for support,” Naranjo said.

The students on Friday took the cause to an array of places around Hollister. Near Target and Safeway, and in the downtown area, they convinced residents to dance with music mixed in to the video production. Each place they went, they brought a sign that read “Dancing for Diana,” seen alongside or behind groups of dancers that ranged from a married couple to a group of Hollister firefighters.

That video can be seen on YouTube at http://www.youtube.com/user/thisisyirok#p/a/u/0/HTY4q_8tB0M.

To donate to the fundraising effort, residents can do so by calling the school or going to the student payment center, Naranjo said. She also noted how they probably will be at Safeway again, too.
