That’s what it reads across the 2003 Official Fair Program and it sure rings loud and true these days.

The San Benito County Fair opens Thursday and runs through Sunday at Bolado Park and like most area residents, we can’t wait to get out there.

For one golden autumn weekend, we can put aside worries about a war in Iraq, a nasty state recall election, a weak state and national economy, local traffic woes, increasing crime, county growth issues and political squabbles.

In this traditional feast for folks of all ages, those day-to-day headaches will fade to terrific food, the sounds of sweet music, thrilling competitions ranging from quilts to cowboys, booth after booth of homespun goodies and just plain and refreshing good old-fashioned fun.

It’s a chance to see those friends you’ve been meaning to call or invite over.

It’s an opportunity to bring your kids – or maybe it’s the grandkids these days – and watch their eyes fill wide with the wonder that only a county fair can bring.

It looks like the weather is going to cooperate as well, so break out the jeans and cowboy hat and dip into the rainy day funds for an extra corndog or lemonade.

As we all know, this yearly showcase of our great county and its people doesn’t get put together overnight.

We salute CEO and fairgrounds manager Kelley Ferreira and just as important the many, many folks behind the scenes – especially the tireless volunteers who, as always, come through when they are so essential to any particular event.

Celebrate our freedom, indeed.

The Free Lance will see you there. Please stop by our booth and say howdy.
