Dear Editor:

After reading the letter to the editor from Ross Blasingame about the Rally changing the character of Hollister and his insinuendos about having to stay indoors all weekend or leave town and not being able to enjoy barbecues or watch fireworks at the high school etc., I’ve got to say “bull hockey.”

All is still enjoyed. It’s up to the person or people. Some enjoy backyard barbecues. Some enjoy the fireworks (now at Maze School by the way). Every year, most enjoy the Rally and all the different vendors and meeting people from all over the planet. It’s really up to the person what he or she likes best.

I’m 77 years old and born and raised here in Hollister. I remember in 1939 and 1940, my parents, Lucy and Fred Alviso, every year would rent their front bedroom to bikers and they were the best behaved people you would ever want to meet. They were very considerate of their surroundings, making sure to not make any noise when they came in to sleep.

Them days (unheard of now) we never locked our doors ever. So they came and went as they pleased. Of course, them days it wasn’t called the Rally. We couldn’t wait for the motorcycle races to come town as they were called then. Sure, some people celebrate a little too much, but let’s not hang it all on the bikers. The people who lived here in Hollister are as much to blame for overindulging and causing fights. In fact, even more so.

As far as noise is concerned, leave town if it’s not for you. Only remember, people do enjoy the Rally and look forward to it every year.

Barbara Bailey Valdez,

Hollister
