Mickie Luna, a longtime advocate for Latino causes in San Benito County and throughout the nation, has received a prestigious honor from the Mexican government for her contributions to Mexican-American causes.
Luna received the Ohtli Award on July 12 at a reception in New York and will be honored at a private, invitation-only reception locally July 24. The award, presented by the president and government of Mexico, is given to people for contributions to empowerment of Mexican-American communities in the United States. It is the highest honor awarded to foreign citizens by the Mexican government.
Luna is national vice president for the Farwest Region – which includes five states – for the League of United Latin American Citizens. She is the former state director and former president of the county’s LULAC council.
