As planned, construction crews reopened the intersection again at Airline Highway and Sunnyslope Road at 1 p.m. today.
For the first time in a month, Hollister residents can travel straight through to their destination rather than face the confusing alternative routes with accompanying U-turns, waits and extra commute times.
“We are now in staged construction,” said Mary Dinkuhn, transportation planning manager for the Council of San Benito County Governments, which is overseeing the $34 million bypass project.
Dinkuhn then noted that another major effect of bypass construction today is the permanent closure of McCray Street, making it necessary for drivers to ultimately use East Park Street.
The traffic lights are currently blinking red, and she said motorists are advised to treat the intersection as they would any other intersection with four-way stop signs, and with extra caution. The lights were set to function normally by this afternoon.
“As always, people need to obey those speed-limit signs,” noted Dinkuhn. “Safety is our No. 1 priority.”
The entire project is expected to be done in October.
